I realized the importance of exploring the pen as a markmaking tool before asking anyone to use it descriptively. Developing a line vocabulary is useful in building skills in both observation and expression. I could have spent more time on discussion - and I definately would like to have included drawing from collections of cultural artifacts...but the day seemed to fly by.
